EP Review : Exitmusic

New York duo Exitmusic exist in their own gloomy, gothic world of electronic music, trip-hop and Radiohead (well, where did you think the name came from?). New EP From Silence, out on Secretly Canadian of all labels, is a stylised and insular release, and it's a very curious record.

It's reviewed over at The Line Of Best Fit by me, and although I try to find the positives in most releases, sometimes the artist makes it very hard......

Album Review : Gardens and Villa

From sunny California comes Gardens & Villa, and alongside their debut record Gardens & Villa, out on Secretly Canadian, they have a singer that occasionally plays the flute. However they don't sound like Jethro Tull - instead, the band has a fine line in cosmic 60s vibes matched with a modern pop sensibility.

New sounds for 2011: Suuns

Time for some spooky, dark electronica courtesy of Montreal's Suuns.

Calling to mind Oneida, Clinic, Suicide, This Heat, and LCD Soundsystem's slower moments, this bunch of Canadians are mining a different musical seam to many of their more well-known countrymen and women. Amid the minimal beats and threatening vocals, there's also a bit of Animal Collective/Tussle style psychedelia to be enjoyed - probably at some end-of-the-world death disco.

Debut LP Zeroes QC was released by Secretly Canadian towards the end of last year, and hopefully their momentum should carry over to make 2011 an interesting year for Suuns.
